How does wireless Internet work? I have wireless on my modem, but how does the dang thing work?

I have wireless on my laptop, but how does the dang thing work? I am not all that technologically advanced!

the wireless modem connects to the internet as long as you connect it to your line. Cable/DSL. so thats wired down.
but the laptop then connects to the modem wirelessly.

so its like…laptop>modem>internet.


do you have a wireless router connected to your modem? if you don’t , you need that in order for your wireless card in your laptop to work.


I have a switch on my laptop, so if you have a router and all the lights say its working, but the computer isn’t picking up the signal, see if there is a wireless on/off switch. It should find your network automatically.


Setting up a secure wireless network (you’ll want it secure if you do any online shopping, banking etc) can be a little tricky. I would suggest reading the manual that comes with your modem, it should tell you how to do it. Once the network is set up, connecting with your laptop should be pretty straightforward.
